There was once an idea of a “Marvel Game World” that would tie all video games together like an MCU, but “not funded”

Marvel Cinematic Universe ruled entertainment through its interconnected films and TV shows that all come together to form a long-term, cohesive narrative. However, Marvel video games do not exist in the same universe, telling stories completely separate and have nothing to do with each other. For example, Insomniac's Marvel Spider-Man game has nothing to do with Eidos-Montreal's Marvel Galaxy Guardians. Similarly, upcoming Marvel games such as Marvel 1943: Hydra, Marvel's Wolverine and the rise of Marvel's Blade, have no connective tissue.
But there was the idea of creating a Marvel game world at Disney, what would that do for Marvel video games, what the MCU did for Marvel movies and TV shows. What's wrong?
Speech The fourth curtain podcastHost Alexander Seropian and guest Alex Irvine recalled the idea of this MGU, both working hard and revealing the reason for it.
Seropian is perhaps one of the founders of Halo and Destiny Developer Bungie, who continues to run Disney’s video game business. Irvine is a long-time writer at Marvel Games, and recently worked in the Smash Hit Marvel Hit Marvel rival of world architecture, dialogue, dialogue and character backstory.
In discussing his previous work in Marvel games, Irving discusses the scrapped MGU.
“When I first started working in Marvel games, their idea was that they would create a Marvel game world with the MCU as a similar one,” said Owen. “It never really happened.”
Seropian then explained that MGU was his “initiative” but never received senior funding from Disney.
“When I was at Disney, that was my initiative, ‘Hey, let’s put these games together.’ This is the former MCU,” Seropian said. “But it didn’t get the funds.”
Irvine, who worked at the iconic Halo Alternative Reality Game (ARG) at Bungie, gave a detailed look at how this MGU works.
“That was frustrating because we came up with all these good ideas on how to do it,” he said.
“I came out of Args then and thought, 'If we had some Arg aspect, wouldn't it be cool?” Somewhere, all the games can touch all the games, and we can move back and forth in the game.
But why can't MGU get an internal buy to keep moving forward? Irvine thinks the idea becomes so complicated that it eventually brings some people into Disney.
“Even then, we wanted to figure out, how would it differ from comics if we were to have this MGU? And I think some of these issues became so complicated that some people at Disney really didn't want to deal with them,” Irving explained.
Imagine if the MGU idea gets the funds needed to become a reality, it's fun. Perhaps if anything, Insomniac's Spider-Man game will be present in the universe of Square Enix's badly-fated Marvel's Avengers and Marvel's Guardians, each of which will feature cameos or stories in the title, involving some activity towards some epic Endergame-style.
Looking ahead, there are questions about Insomniac's Wolverine game. Will it be set in the same universe as Marvel's Spider-Man? Can Spider-Man or any other character in these games end up making a cameo in Wolverine to some extent?
Alas, MGU has dropped, and it's another scrapped video game idea. Although, maybe in another universe somewhere, this is a reality…
