Sega's Arcade Racing Game Outrun will be a surprising film adaptation, and Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney are attached.
Hollywood Reporter Says Universal director Bay is lined up to direct and produce “Beyond Movie” directly, while Sweeney also signed the producer. Jayson Rothwell will write the script, although there are no plot details yet. There is no release date either.
On the SEGA side, Toru Nakahara, who works in Sonic films, is the producer, and Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the film.
Starting in 1986, Outrun is an impressive arcade driving game designed by SEGA developer Legend Yu Suzuki. It has seen many versions and ports over the years and released a proper sequel in 2003, but some have been dormant lately. The most recent version was in 2009 with Sumo Digital Beyond Online Arcade.
However, SEGA, with the new crazy taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Ax, Virtua Fighter and Shinobi Games, all dipped in their rear catalog.
SEGA also promoted the adaptation of its coveted IP. Sound movies are of course popular and adapted like dragons: Yakuza launched on Amazon last year. Hollywood is keen on more video game movies, as well as the Super Mario Bros. movies and the recently released Minecraft Breaking Records.
As for what kind of movie it will be, maybe Bay and Sweeney Invisage Quist & Furious style driving and action flicks.
