Minecraft Review – Just what you think, good or bad

The idea of a movie called Minecraft starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa sounded like a joke about the current state of video game movies. However, in 2025, this is not only a reality, but also the right choice for the franchise to expand to the big screen.
The Minecraft movie is exactly what you think it is based on the trailer. It's a big, cartoon live-action movie filled with silly jokes, Minecraft references and a weird surreal world with a variety of creatures and our human heroes. While this may not be the movies that adults want with Minecraft who are growing up and now adults want, it is a great service for younger audiences who are closer to their own Minecraft Journeys.
The Minecraft movie follows a very simple premise. Many years ago, a man named Steve (Black) was entangled in some way in the Minecraft off-road world through the Earth’s portal. As he likes to build, it was his dream come true and he became his new home. A few years later he became a prisoner of Margossa (Rachel House), a Pig Forest Witch who directed the swarms of characters longing for the golden pigs to take Overworld as her own world, devouring all its gold. Fast forward to modern times, when four other people ended in a cross-world, leading to adventures to help escape Steve save the Cube Paradise he loved.

This is a movie based on group missions and we see its level of success based on other games. Dungeon and Dragon: Honor between Thieves Very well done. bordernot that much. Minecraft is in between, closer to the former than the latter. This is largely thanks to the audiences the film knows its goals. It's not like adult players to make a carefully crafted field of elaborate crafting, but rather targeting young gamers who are still figuring out everything about Minecraft – those guys like the humorous black use of Super Mario Bros in Voicing Bowser of Super Mario Bros. and even Jim Carrey performing in Robotnik.
In fact, Steve in the Minecraft movie plays like Jack Black's character in the early 2000s, and Sonic's Eggman feels like Jim Carrey's role in the 90s. Black's Steve is a stupid ball, obsessed with the world he's always living in. When his new friend ends with him in the cross-world, he finally has the opportunity to show off everything he is proud of in his time.
Newbie is a mixed bag. On the positive side, Momoa is almost perfect as retired video game champion Garrett's “Trump Man” garrison. Imagine Momoa's Aquaman's Bravado wrapped in the body of a guy who always fails, persistently trying to relive his brilliant time as an arcade game champion in a world without arcades. He was fun throughout the process, usually his spiral spiral rod jokes that needed to feel celebrated, and yes, he wore a great pink edge jacket for most of the movie. Garbage Man is the best character in the movie.
The definition of the rest of the cast is not that defined. Natalie (Emma Myers on Wednesday) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen of Just Mercy) are dealing with the loss of losing parents by siblings and moving to a new city. Natalie found work as a social media leader in a company that apparently had no social media presence, and Henry landed in a new school without friends, a love of architecture – like Steve. Peace Truck’s outstanding Danielle Brooks plays Dawn, who helps them find a new home. These characters have nothing else to say, because they are one-dimensionally comparable. And the performance is good, but don't improve the material.

They often feel like add-ons to Steve and Garbage Man's quirky hijinks, although Henry quickly brought to the world of Minecraft, figuring out how to make items and build structures. But considering how Henry and his sister were introduced, you might expect them to play a more important role in the plot. That movie isn't as stupid as this one, though.
That's the point. During the film screening provided by Warner Bros., I used to be a family-filled theater. Throughout the movie, the kids laughed constantly. Humor is aimed at them, and it hits Mark head-on. Beyond that, all references, characters and elements in the world draw exciting from the game. For adults, there are cameos and surprises that tend to entertain older audiences rather than younger ones.
As an adult, I've been spending too much time playing Minecraft and I find myself between these two audiences. I love seeing a real world, watching villagers interact with humans, even like chicken jockeys – zombies riding chickens – attacking characters. I love the variety of sound effects drawn directly from the game and watching the actual humans react to the hissing of the creeper's moment of light fusion. But my enjoyment comes not only from my Minecraft Reference, as I also love the extended cameo of Jennifer Coolidge, the vice-chancellor of Henry School, and some other indestructible surprises.
Of course, everything about Minecraft is not as expected. In fact, the biggest miss was the reaction to the success of Super Mario Bros. movies. In that movie, Black's Bowser sang the song's Peach, which continued to take a hit after the release of the movie, snapping up the Golden Globes and Critics Choice nominations.

In a Minecraft movie, Black has some different musical moments, but none of them landed. Rather than being the fun of fitting the film frame and making the moments around you better – as in the Super Mario Bros. movie, the songs from “Brack” in this movie are forced and inappropriate.
In addition, there are some humorous moments in the film, directed by Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre Helmer Jared Hess, which feels less real to Minecraft than Hess’s own personal brand of random humor is more like his personal comic sensibility than what serves the film. A special joke about Steve carrying cheese in his pocket comes from the left field, without purpose and without following up anything. It involves a specific type of cheese, and in Minecraft it is just “cheese”. Leaving the theater, I found myself wondering why this joke makes sense for the movie. It has nothing to do with Minecraft, nor is it about the characters. Just in one of the dramatic moments of the film, it definitely didn’t add to one of the most popular sequences in the film. In fact, it is a distraction for mediocre jokes at best.
While these pickiness may bother some viewers, they are not enough to make me sore in the movie. I love this colorful adventure, stuffed with things I love. The film won't walk away with a series of Oscars, but it should highly entertain its expected young audience. And if you are like me, a big kid who still plays Minecraft and often likes Jack Black's stupid sense of humor. When the first trailer for this movie dropped, I had a good idea of what to expect from the Minecraft movie. I'm happy to say that it satisfies those expectations well for my taste. More importantly, this makes me want to go into another adventure with these characters on Overworld. So when you sit down in the theater this weekend, it's time for your childhood miracle to take over for a while. I don't think you will regret it.
