A new report from research firm Newzoo suggests that the storm may be tightening the contest type, but Fortnite Still stay strong.
Newzoo's PC & Console Games Report 2025 details many shifts and trends across the industry, one of which is the genre of the Grand Royals. Newzoo's tracking shows that Royale-type game time has been reduced, from 19% in 2021 to 12% in 2024.
Newzoo, citing its gaming performance monitor, the company looks at 37 markets (excluding China and India) in PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and he shows that as a pair, shooter and battle royale games typically account for 40% of game time. Therefore, as the battle time of the Royal arena gradually changes, the shooter game time has been increasing.
Despite the 7% shift, the differences within the genre are probably the more surprising numbers. Per per newzoo, Fortnite increased from 43% of the Royal Campaign in 2021 to 77% of the shares in 2024. Essentially, even as Battle Royale Games became popular, Fortnite was increasingly taking over more and more space in the genre.
Role-playing games have also seen some significant growth, with a share of up to 13% in 2024. Newzoo reports that 18% of RPG time in 2024 have been spent in major releases starting in 2023, focusing on Baldur's Gate's Gate's Gate 3, Diablo IV, Diablo IV, IV, Hinkai: Hinkai: Honkai: Star Rail, Hogwarts Legacy Legacy and Starfield and Starfield and Starfield and Starfield and Starfield and Starfield and Starfield.
As Newzoo says in its report, the struggle for attention in game time and hours is very intense. While games like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends, other games Leave on the roadside. Meanwhile, shooter and role-playing games seem to be occupying more areas and ideas. It’s hard to argue when watching the success of outstanding figures in these genres, whether it’s Miracle competitors or Bauder’s Door 3.
With its ever-changing, updated and growing library of gaming experiences and genres, it’s probably no surprise that Fortnite has already survived the storm. Nevertheless, as the years grow and with the wider audience’s interest changes, time undoubtedly continues to change trends.
