The U.S. market stumbled today after China fought back against Donald Trump's tariff raft. China, which faces a 54% import tax, has retaliated against a 34% tax on U.S. goods starting next week.
Trump, moments before the U.S. market opened, “China made a mistake, they paniced” and insisted that his policies would “never change.”
Now, the world is facing economic uncertainty, with some mainstream news media announcing the current era of cheap goods for American consumers, as higher tariffs are automatically passed to inflation and higher prices.
Tariffs are essentially taxes on the cost of importing certain commodities. While it is possible for companies in the supply chain to simply consume these fees, these taxes are often passed on to consumers. Unfortunately, for gamers, rising prices are likely to affect technology and gaming products.
Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad warned Trump's surprise tariffs on countries like Vietnam, where Nintendo shifted some Switch 2 manufacturing industries in anticipation of U.S. tariffs on China, which could cause rethinking.
“Although the company has moved some of its manufacturing sector to Vietnam to offset U.S. tariffs on China, the threat of reciprocity tariffs looms ahead of the Switch 2 Showcase will also force Nintendo to consider higher prices in other parts of the world,” Ahmed said. “Reciprocity tariffs on Vietnam and Japan are higher than expected, and if the tariffs go into effect fully, Nintendo will feel the impact.”
